code-server Browser IDE

code-server 4.143.1 (Code 1.143.1) with Node.js 24 LTS, Python 3.12, Git, GitHub CLI, AWS CLI v2, Docker with Compose and build tools on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Write, run and debug code from any web browser with a full editor, integrated terminal and Open VSX extensions, while your code, builds and containers run on a cloud server you control. HTTPS works from the first boot, and a helper switches the server to your own domain with a trusted certificate.

AWS

Getting started on Amazon Web Services

From launch to signed in, step by step.

  1. Subscribe on AWS Marketplace and launch in your region with TCP 22, 80 and 443 open.

  2. Wait up to 15 minutes for first boot, then SSH in as ubuntu with your key pair and run sudo pc-credentials show to read this instance's random passwords (they are not the instance ID).

  3. Open https://<instance-public-ip>/, accept the one-time self-signed certificate warning and enter the codeserver password (there is no username). Your projects folder is /home/ubuntu/workspace.

  4. Webmin is local only: run ssh -i key.pem -N -L 18000:127.0.0.1:8000 ubuntu@<instance-public-ip>, then open http://localhost:18000/ and sign in as admin with the webmin password.

  5. Change passwords with sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_codeserver.sh or pass_webmin.sh; check the server with sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/codeserver_status.sh. Use your own domain with sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/set_domain.sh.

  6. Back up the application with sudo pc-backup create /var/backups/application.tar.gz and copy the file off the server.

Security posture

What this AWS image does and does not ship with, one fact per line.

  • Clean-room build on Canonical's official Ubuntu 24.04 LTS image: code-server is the official release, and nothing is copied from any third-party image. code-server listens only on the server itself behind nginx with HTTPS.

  • No password or key ships in the image: on first boot every instance creates its own random passwords, HTTPS certificate and server keys, which you read over SSH with `sudo pc-credentials show`.

  • Webmin listens only on the server itself and is reached through an SSH tunnel, SSH is key-only, and build-time SSH keys, host keys, machine ID, shell history and logs were removed before imaging.

  • Replace the self-signed certificate with a trusted one before production use, and restrict port 22 to trusted IP ranges in your security group.

Azure

Getting started on Microsoft Azure

From launch to signed in, step by step.

  1. Create the VM from the Azure Marketplace listing with TCP 22, 80 and 443 open in your network security group. Choose ubuntu as the administrator username so SSH and the script paths match, and wait a few minutes for first boot to finish.

  2. Open https://<vm-public-ip>/ (the first certificate is self-signed, so your browser shows a warning). The password is a random password made for this VM on its first boot. Read it over SSH with sudo pc-credentials show (the entry labelled codeserver). Your projects live in /home/ubuntu/workspace. Change the password with sudo bash ~/iscripts/pass_codeserver.sh.

  3. For production, limit admin ports to your own IP address.

Security posture

What this Azure image does and does not ship with, one fact per line.

  • Clean-room build on Canonical's official Ubuntu 24.04 LTS image from the Azure Marketplace: every component comes from its own official source and no third-party image was launched or copied.

  • No two VMs share a login: first boot sets every password and secret key from the new VM's own vmId (read from Azure IMDS) or from fresh random values, and creates new SSH host keys.

  • The ubuntu login account ships password-locked with an empty authorized_keys, and Azure installs your own SSH key at deploy time.

  • Shell history, logs and cloud-init state are cleared before capture, and the image carries every Ubuntu 24.04 LTS security update with nothing pending.

  • Each gallery version is deployed as a Trusted Launch VM and checked against Microsoft's documented Linux certification test cases, the product's own end-to-end login tests and a stop/start cycle before it is published.

  • Restrict port 22 and the admin consoles to trusted IP ranges, and put public web consoles behind HTTPS with your own certificate.
